Even though Kelly had a successful career at a biotech company, a wonderful family, and beachside living in sunny San Diego, she felt like something was missing.
“My job wasn’t conducive to the life I wanted. I hardly saw my kids because I was either working, traveling, or sitting in traffic all day. None of it felt worth it anymore. I knew something needed to change.”
And something did change, but not in the way she wanted it to…
“I had just gotten divorced when one morning, out of the blue, I got laid off. Before then, I had no idea my job was on the line. I was absolutely devastated.”
She scrambled to find work, but as a single mother, Kelly was determined to stay away from the corporate grind.
“The idea of going back to an office made me sick to my stomach. Leaving my kids at daycare for twelve hours every day, missing Little League…I refused to be the mom who’s never there because she’s always working.”
The brutal struggle of starting from scratch
Kelly decided to try her hand at freelancing. But building a client base proved to be extremely difficult and time consuming.
“I had no idea how to find new clients other than literally walking down the street handing out business cards.”
She kept at it for a while, but despite her efforts, she struggled to find steady work.
“I only had a couple of clients. Some weeks I’d be really busy, but then there would be nothing for the next few months. It didn’t seem sustainable, but I felt like I didn’t have any other options.”
When her situation didn’t improve even after months of toiling away with door-to-door pitches, Kelly was willing to try anything. That’s when she remembered there was another option: freelance marketplaces.
“I had briefly tried Upwork and other freelancing sites in the past, but I never heard back from any of my proposals. It was discouraging to keep getting rejected so I wrote it off as a complete waste of time.”
Now things were different. With her business card strategy failing to get her the amount of work she needed, Kelly began to gravitate back towards online freelancing — this time with a new mindset.
“I started to think: there are thousands of clients online who are already looking for freelancers. If I could figure out how to make it work, it might be the opening I needed.”
A desperate move leads to hidden opportunity
When Kelly finally committed to figuring out a strategy for online freelancing, she quickly came across Freelance To Win.
“I was so relieved to finally find a different way of looking at Upwork. There might be 50 people bidding on a single job, and the lowest bid might be $3/hour…but now I realized that the most successful freelancers were doing things very differently.”
She discovered specific changes she could make right away to boost her chances of success. She put one tip to use right away…and the ball started rolling pretty quickly.
“Reading about Danny’s Crystal Ball Technique totally opened my eyes. It taught me that it was actually possible to win jobs and earn a living on Upwork.”
Cracking the Upwork code
Now that she knew the possibilities, Kelly was ready to go full steam ahead. When she first heard about Secrets Of A Six-Figure Upworker, she felt it was exactly what she needed: a proven system for succeeding at online freelancing.
“Joining Secrets Of A Six-Figure Upworker was a financial stretch for me. But once I took the leap, I started winning jobs within a few weeks. Getting that first contract and getting my foot in the door was just awesome. My first job literally paid for the entire course.”
After carefully studying the course material, Kelly made a bold move and turned her proposal strategy upside down.
“Before, I was basically just pasting my resume into the proposal box. I’d waste space by saying things like, ‘I’m fast, I’m efficient.’ I realize now that those are expected from freelancers and mentioning them in your proposal doesn’t help you stand out.”
Now she’s in a league of her own when she applies for jobs.
“While everyone else is writing about their skills and qualifications, I use my proposal to offer my clients a solution. It’s super easy to grab attention with a proposal that shows clients I understand their unique needs.”
Kelly churned out winning proposals so quickly that she opened yet another door for herself: attracting her first private invites.
“By far one of the most valuable lessons you learn about in SSFU is how to break into the Hidden Upwork Economy. Now, clients are reaching out to me for work because of the techniques I’ve learned. If I hadn’t taken this course I never would have known that was even a possibility.”
Reappraising her worth
In just a few short months, Kelly turned unemployment into a brand new beginning. These days, her opportunities seem endless.
“It felt awesome to just follow the system and watch the results pour in. I got my first job just a couple of weeks after starting Danny’s course. Before that, I’d never won even a single bid. I’ve made $16,000 since then — and that’s just working a few hours a week.”
Now, she knows what she’s worth — and consistently wins jobs at rates she deserves.
“I started out at $40/hour. Honestly, I thought that was going to be way too high. But by the time I got to my third job, I had upped my rate to $50/hour. Now, I charge $85/hour and I’m still winning contracts.”
Her clients know how valuable her services are. In fact, one client is worth quite a bit himself…and Kelly has quickly become a big asset to his success.
“One of my repeat clients is actually an NFL player. He’s working on a start-up right now and I made a slide deck for him. He loved my work. After the first contract he told me he might have some more projects for me in the future. Well, he just emailed me and said, ‘Get ready, we have a lot of work coming in.’”
Grabbing the reins on her career
Until she got laid off, Kelly always thought maintaining an 8 to 6 job was the safest thing she could do for her family. Now she realizes how much more stable freelancing is to a traditional job.
“One of the biggest things I realized was I don’t want somebody else to have that much control over my fate. It sucks to have somebody else tell you when and how you’re going to work. Freelancing allows me to have total control, not only over my schedule but also my livelihood.”
Now that she’s doing what she loves on her own terms, she feels better about herself than ever.
“Freelancing totally changed my confidence level. People love what I’m doing, I’m doing work I love and I’m good at, and I’m doing it all my own way. For years I couldn’t figure out how people were even surviving as freelancers. Now, I’m the one winning — I’m the one making this work.”
Living the life she used to dream of
Kelly’s professional accomplishments speak for themselves. But her greatest success? Now she does work she loves and spends precious time with her family.
“My husband and I always do date night on Thursday — we love the jazz bar downtown. And we’re always on-the-go — my daughter does competitive cheer and my son plays baseball, so we travel all over the West Coast for competitions. I love being able to travel with them!”
Kelly’s feet are firmly planted in her new lifestyle…and she’s never looking back.
“Freelancing gives me that purpose that I was looking for. This is what I want to be doing all the time.”
